Terms

In short

One-way Valve is a library of pour-over coffee recipes and water profiles. Reading it is free and needs no account. With an account you can add recipes, add water profiles, comment, and favourite things.

Two things are worth reading properly rather than skimming: Brewing and water treatment, because water profiles tell you to put minerals in water you are going to drink, and Recipes that belong to other people, because most of this library is other people's work, credited to them.

Who this agreement is with

These terms are between you and One-way Valve. Using the site means you accept them. If you do not, please do not use it.

Your account

  • You need to be old enough to agree to these terms where you live, and at least 16.
  • Keep your sign-in details to yourself. Anything done through your account is treated as done by you.
  • One person, one account. Do not create accounts to get around a removal or a block.
  • An account can be suspended or removed for breaking these terms. Where it is reasonable to do so, you will be told why.

What you post

You keep ownership of everything you submit. By posting it here you give permission to store it, display it on the site, and show it in listings and previews — which is simply what publishing it here means. That permission lasts as long as the content is on the site.

By posting, you are saying that:

  • you have the right to post it, and it does not infringe anyone else's rights;
  • any image address you enter points at something you are allowed to link to;
  • you have credited whoever the method actually came from, where it is not your own.

Anything you post is public the moment you save it. Please do not put anything here you would not want read by anyone.

Recipes that belong to other people

Much of this library is drawn from roasters, cafés and people who make videos about coffee. That is the point of it — but it means the credit matters more than usual.

A brewing method — a dose, a ratio, a pour schedule, a temperature — is not something anyone owns. The way someone writes it up is. So recipes here are recorded as parameters and steps, with the creator named and a link back to where it came from wherever that is known. If you add a recipe from somewhere else, do the same: fill in the creator and the source, and put it in your own words rather than pasting theirs.

Images are loaded from the address whoever submitted the recipe entered, usually the roaster's own site. They are not copied or re-hosted here.

If something of yours is here and you want it changed or removed

Write to connect@onewayvalve.coffee with a link to the page and what the problem is — wrong credit, a method you would rather was not listed, an image you want unlinked, or anything you believe infringes your rights. Say who you are and what you would like done.

Requests are dealt with by hand and taken seriously. Removing a recipe is easy, so there is no reluctance about doing it. You do not need to send a formal notice first.

Comments and conduct

Do not use the site to:

  • post anything abusive, harassing, hateful, or deliberately misleading;
  • advertise, spam, or post links unrelated to the recipe at hand;
  • post someone else's personal information, or impersonate anyone;
  • scrape it wholesale, hammer it with automated requests, or try to reach data that is not yours.

Comments can be removed, and accounts blocked, for any of the above.

Moderation and the verified mark

Anything submitted appears straight away — nothing is reviewed before it is published. A green check on a recipe or water profile means it has been looked at and matches its stated source. It is a note of confidence, not a promise that the recipe will suit your coffee, your grinder, or your water.

Recipes, water profiles and comments may be edited or removed where they break these terms, are plainly wrong, or on request from whoever the method belongs to.

Brewing and water treatment

Please read this one. Water profiles on this site describe adding minerals — calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, sodium and potassium bicarbonate and similar — to water that you then drink. That is ordinary practice in speciality coffee, and it is also chemistry.

  • Follow the instructions from whoever made the product you are using. They take precedence over anything written here.
  • Use food-grade materials, and measure them. A profile scaled to the wrong volume can be far more concentrated than intended.
  • Start from water that is safe to drink to begin with — distilled or deionised water where the profile calls for it.
  • If you have a medical reason to watch your sodium, potassium, or mineral intake, talk to a doctor rather than relying on a recipe site.

Recipes and profiles here are submitted by people, not verified by a laboratory. Nothing on this site is medical, dietary, or safety advice, and following any of it is your own decision. Brewing also involves water near boiling — the usual care applies.

What is not promised

The site is offered as it is. It may be unavailable, slow, or lose data; recipes may be inaccurate, incomplete, or attributed to the wrong person. There is no promise that it will keep running, keep any particular feature, or keep your content indefinitely. Keep your own copy of anything you would be sorry to lose.

There is nothing to pay. The site sells nothing, has no subscriptions, and no part of it is behind a payment.

You can tip through the link in the footer if you want to. It is voluntary, it goes to the person running the site rather than to the site, and it buys you nothing — no feature, no priority, no say over what gets listed. Payment is handled entirely by Ko-fi under their terms; nothing about it reaches this site, and refunds are a matter for them.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, One-way Valve is not liable for loss or damage arising from using the site, from anything posted on it, or from any recipe or water profile you follow. Nothing here limits liability that cannot legally be limited — including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Ending it

You can stop using the site at any time. To have your account removed, email connect@onewayvalve.coffee.

What happens to what you posted: your profile, your comments, your upvotes and your favourites are deleted with the account. Recipes and water profiles you submitted are kept, with your name removed from them, because other people may have favourited them or built on them. If you want those gone too, say so in your email and they will be deleted before the account is. The same is set out in the privacy policy.

Changes

These terms may change. The date at the top changes with them, and anything significant is noted in the changelog. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting it.
